Public Defender

Kelsey Helget is a Nebraska native, born and raised in Blair.  She attended Creighton University, majoring in Theater with a minor in Legal Studies and Criminal Justice Policy.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2011.  Kelsey attended the University of Nebraska College of Law where she completed the Litigation Skills Program of Concentrated Study, was elected by the faculty to the Order of the Barristers, and earned her law degree in 2014.  Kelsey participated on the school's Trial Team, Arbitration Team, Mediation Team, and International Mediation Team.  Kelsey was awarded the Outstanding Advocate Award and won the intra-school competition for the International Mediation competition.  At the College of Law, Kelsey was a member of the Student Innocence Project, the Alternative Dispute Resolution club, the Nebraska Defense Counsel Association, and the Student Bar Association.

Kelsey worked as a law clerk for two different small firms and participated in the Civil Clinic and Criminal Clinic at the law school.  Kelsey served in private practice for two years in the areas of juvenile law, family law, guardianships, and administrative law for individuals with developmental disabilities. At the Public Defender’s Office Kelsey will be handling Juvenile and Child Support Enforcement cases along with criminal misdemeanors.

When not practicing law, Kelsey enjoys attending the theatre and concerts, playing board games, and looking fondly at her Guinness World Record Certificate prominently displayed in her office.
